History

Dunbar United Methodist Church was born from the union of Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church and First Church United Methodist.

First Church United Methodist began in 1910 as a United Brethern in Christ church. On November 16, 1946 the Evangelical Church and the United Brethren in Christ church merged to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church. First Church and Roxalana were both Evangelical United Brethren Churches. On April 13, 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church merged to form the United Methodist Church.

After this merger, Dunbar had 4 United Methodist Churches: Humphreys Memorial United Methodist, First Church United Methodist, Roxalana United Methodist, and Calvary United Methodist. On June 17, 1984, Roxalana United Methodist became a part of First Church. Calvary United Methodist joined with First Church on April 16, 1990.

The final merger happened on October 14, 2007 between Humphreys and First Church to create Dunbar United Methodist Church. In some ways we are a new congregation, even though we have been a presence in Dunbar for many years. But whether we are old or new, and whatever traditions we hold on to or yield, the birth of Dunbar United Methodist Church is a testament to the united Body of Christ and we pray that our congregation may be his witness to the community.
